Choosing the Right Google Business Profile Categories

Choosing the Right Google Business Profile Categories

If you change only one thing on your Google Business Profile this month, check your categories. Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches your business appears in. Get it wrong, and you can have hundreds of reviews and still not show up for the searches that matter.

Primary vs secondary categories

Every profile has exactly one primary category and can add up to nine secondary categories. The primary category carries the most weight. Secondary categories help you appear for related searches, but they don't replace a well-chosen primary one.

How to choose your primary category

  1. Describe your business in a few words. "We are a dental clinic." "We are a unisex salon." "We are a coaching institute for NEET." That sentence usually points straight at the right category.
  2. Be as specific as the category list allows. "Orthodontist" is better than "Dentist" if braces are most of your work. "Indian restaurant" or "Punjabi restaurant" is better than "Restaurant".
  3. Look at who ranks first. Search for your main service in your area and open the top three profiles. Their primary category is shown just under the business name. If all three use the same one, that is a strong hint.
  4. Pick what you are, not what you wish to rank for. Choosing a category for a service you don't really offer can lead to unhappy customers and, in some cases, profile suspension.

Good secondary categories

Add a secondary category only when it describes a real part of your business. A dental clinic that offers implants and teeth whitening might add "Dental implants periodontist" and "Teeth whitening service". A salon that also runs a bridal studio might add "Bridal shop" or "Make-up artist" if that work is genuinely done there.

Common mistakes we see in Punjab

  • A gym listed as "Health" instead of "Gym" or "Fitness center".
  • A restaurant that is mainly takeaway, with no "Takeout restaurant" or "Meal delivery" category.
  • Coaching institutes using "School", which pulls in parents searching for schools rather than students searching for coaching.
  • Ten categories added at once, half of which the business does not serve.

After you change categories

Category changes can take a few days to settle, and Google sometimes asks for verification again after big changes. Make one considered change, then watch your profile's performance report for a few weeks before changing it again.

Not sure which category fits you best? It is one of the first things we check in our free profile check, and it is included in every GBP management plan.
