Your customers scroll fast. On Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp Status, a post gets about a second to catch their eye before the thumb moves on. A good banner makes them stop. A poor one disappears, no matter how good your offer or message is. The good news is that most banner problems come from the same handful of mistakes, and all of them are easy to fix.
1. Too much text
The most common mistake. The owner wants to say everything: services, offer, timings, address, two phone numbers and a festival greeting. The result is a wall of small text nobody reads.
Fix: one message per banner. A short headline, one supporting line, and your contact details. If you have more to say, put it in the caption or make a second banner tomorrow.
2. Logo and contact details missing or hidden
A beautiful festival banner without your name on it is a free greeting card for someone else's business. On the other hand, a giant logo covering half the design looks like an advertisement and gets skipped.
Fix: keep your logo, business name and phone number in a consistent strip, usually at the bottom, in the same place every day. People start to recognise your posts at a glance.
3. Wrong size for the platform
A wide banner posted to WhatsApp Status ends up as a thin strip in the middle of a black screen. A tall Story design posted to the Instagram feed gets cropped.
Fix: make two versions of important banners: a square or slightly tall one for feed posts, and a full-height vertical one for Status and Stories.
4. Text you can't read on a phone
Thin, fancy fonts, light grey text on a white background, or text placed over a busy photo. It may look fine on a computer screen. On a phone in sunlight, it is unreadable.
Fix: use bold, simple fonts, strong contrast and a plain area behind text. Check every banner on your own phone before posting.
5. Random colours every day
Red on Monday, purple on Tuesday, neon green on Wednesday. Nothing ties your posts together, so nothing sticks in the customer's memory.
Fix: pick two or three brand colours and use them in every banner, with festival colours added on top during festivals. Consistency is what turns posts into a recognisable brand.
6. Low-quality or copied images
Blurry photos, stretched logos, images with someone else's watermark, or pictures taken from a search engine. Apart from looking unprofessional, using images you don't have rights to can lead to copyright complaints.
Fix: use your own clear photos, original designs or properly licensed graphics, and always use a high-resolution version of your logo.
7. Nothing to do next
The banner catches attention, but the customer doesn't know what to do with it. Call? Visit? Book?
Fix: add one clear next step in the design or caption: "Call to book", "Visit us in Model Town", "WhatsApp us for the menu". One step, not four.
A quick checklist before you post
- Can I understand the message in two seconds?
- Is my business name and number clearly visible?
- Is it the right size for where I'm posting?
- Is it readable on my phone?
- Does it look like my brand?
- Are all the images mine or properly licensed?
- Is there one clear next step?
Good banners are not about fancy design. They are about one clear message, shown consistently, every day.
