Fake or Spam Google Reviews on Your Profile? How to Spot and Report Them

Every business owner eventually sees a review that makes no sense. A one-star rating from someone who was never a customer. A long complaint about a different business. A burst of negative reviews in one evening. It is natural to feel angry. The good news is that Google has a process for reviews that break its policies. The less good news is that it only works for reviews that genuinely break those policies, not for reviews that are simply unfair or negative.

What Google will and won't remove

Google's review policies prohibit content such as:

  • Fake engagement: reviews that don't reflect a genuine experience, or reviews posted to manipulate a rating.
  • Off-topic content: reviews about something unrelated, like politics or another business.
  • Conflicts of interest: reviews from competitors, current or former employees reviewing their employer, or owners reviewing themselves.
  • Offensive content: hate speech, harassment, obscene language, threats.
  • Personal information: phone numbers, addresses or private details of staff.
  • Impersonation and illegal content.

What Google will not remove is a genuine customer's honest opinion, even if it is harsh, exaggerated or one you strongly disagree with. A patient who felt the wait was too long is allowed to say so.

Signs a review might be fake

  • You cannot match the name, date or details with any customer record.
  • The reviewer has posted many similar reviews for businesses in different cities on the same day.
  • Several negative reviews arrive within hours, with similar wording.
  • The review describes services you don't offer, or a location you don't have.
  • The review mentions a competitor by name and recommends going there instead.

None of these is proof on its own. Check your records calmly before you decide. Sometimes a customer simply uses a nickname.

How to report a review

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile.
  2. Open your profile on Google Search or Maps and go to Reviews.
  3. Find the review, tap the three-dot menu next to it and choose the option to report it.
  4. Pick the reason that best matches the policy it breaks. Choose carefully. "Off topic" and "conflict of interest" are different things.
  5. Note the date you reported it.

Google also offers a reviews management tool in its help centre where you can check the status of reviews you have reported and, if a report is rejected, appeal the decision with more detail. Search for "Google reviews management tool" from the account that manages your profile.

Reply while you wait

Reviews you report stay visible until Google decides. Customers reading your profile will see the review and your reply, so a short, calm reply protects you either way:

"We take every review seriously, but we could not find any record of a visit matching this description. If you were our customer, please contact us directly so we can look into it."

Do not accuse the reviewer of being a competitor in public, even if you suspect it. It reads badly, and if you are wrong it reads much worse.

What not to do

  • Don't flag every negative review. Reporting genuine reviews wastes your time and does not help your case with real violations.
  • Don't buy positive reviews to "balance out" bad ones. Fake positive reviews break the same rules and can lead to restrictions on your profile.
  • Don't ask staff, friends or family to post reviews pretending to be customers.
  • Don't offer customers anything in return for removing or changing a review.

The best long-term defence

A profile with a steady stream of genuine reviews is far less affected by one fake review than a profile with only a handful. Make asking easy: a review link on your bill, a polite request at the counter, or a tap card at the reception desk. Then reply to every review, good or bad, so people can see you are paying attention.
