Why Google Suspends Business Profiles, and How to Avoid It

Few things worry a local business owner more than opening Google Maps and finding their profile gone, or seeing a message that it has been suspended or restricted. Calls drop, and new customers can't find you. Suspensions do happen to genuine businesses, but most come from a small set of guideline problems that are easy to avoid once you know them.

The most common reasons

  • Keywords in the business name. "Sharma Dental Clinic" is fine. "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Implants Ludhiana" is not. Your name on Google must match your real-world name on your signage and documents.
  • An address you don't really operate from. Virtual offices, co-working addresses you never use, post boxes or a friend's shop. Google expects a real location with staff during the stated hours, unless you are a service-area business.
  • Showing an address when customers don't visit you. If you serve customers at their location, such as home tutors, pest control or plumbers, and don't receive customers at your own address, you should set up as a service-area business and hide the address.
  • Multiple profiles for one business. One location should have one profile. Creating extra profiles for different services or nearby areas breaks the rules.
  • Ineligible businesses. Online-only businesses with no in-person contact, and rental or for-sale properties listed as businesses, generally don't qualify.
  • Fake or incentivised reviews. Buying reviews, review swaps, or rewarding customers for reviews can lead to reviews being removed and restrictions on the profile.
  • Suspicious edits. Frequent changes to the name, address or category in a short time can trigger a review, especially on a new profile.

How to stay safe

  1. Read Google's guidelines for representing your business once. They are not long, and they are the rulebook Google uses.
  2. Use your real name, real address and a local phone number that is answered.
  3. Make sure your signage, website and documents match your profile.
  4. Choose categories that describe what you are, not every service you offer.
  5. Make important changes carefully and one at a time, and expect that a name or address change may need re-verification.
  6. Only give manager access to people you trust, and remove old employees and agencies you no longer work with.

If your profile is suspended

Don't panic, and don't create a new profile. Creating a replacement usually makes things worse.

  1. Sign in and read the exact message Google shows on your profile. It usually indicates whether the profile is suspended or restricted.
  2. Read the guidelines and honestly check your profile against them. Fix anything that doesn't comply, such as removing keywords from the name.
  3. Gather evidence that your business is real at that address: a photo of your signage, a photo of the shop front with the street visible, a business registration or GST certificate, a utility bill, or a shop licence.
  4. Submit an appeal through Google's Business Profile appeals tool, linked from the help centre and from the suspension notice.
  5. Wait for a response. You can check the status in the same tool. Avoid submitting repeat appeals while one is under review.

Things that do not help

  • Paying anyone who claims to have a "contact inside Google".
  • Posting angry reviews or comments about Google.
  • Submitting edited or misleading documents. This can permanently damage your chances.

Prevention is easier than recovery

A clean, honest profile with accurate details, real photos and genuine reviews is very rarely suspended, and if it is, it is much easier to get reinstated. The shortcuts that promise quick ranking are usually the same ones that lead to suspensions.
